Location; James Island, The Gambia
Date: November 2003
This small island played a tremendous role in the history of slavery.
Hundreds of slaves were at the same time prisoner on this island
for a few weeks, waiting for exportation to Senegal and from there
to the USA. A lot of the slaves died on this island and where thrown
into the water (and eaten by crocodiles). For those who survived
the island, manly died because of the long and hard journey to the
USA.
The tree you see is a Baobab tree. At the other places in The Gambia
are these trees in November full with leaves. Only on this small
island they lost all there leaves. Believes are that these trees
can become hundreds or thousand years old. It is a silent witness
